Retro Review: Hedwig and the Angry Inch

Here is a brief movie review I wrote awhile back for the movie "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" that I decided to stick in here. It is a pretty good movie, so I hope you will find this little tidbit worthwhile. (I also added some extra thoughts, since my brain has grown a little bit since then.)

"Movie Review : Hedwig and the Angry Inch

Poor little Hedwig spends an oppressive childhood living in Communist East Germany where he is sexually abused by his father, mother, and the family cat...later on, he loses his wee wee in a most unfortunate threshing accident. To make matters worse, his family's apartment is so tiny his mother makes Hedwig play in the oven. Yes, the oven. Listening to punk rock music on American Armed Forces Radio is Hedwig's only salvation, and in his late upper, middle twenties he finally heads to the U.S. to chase the elusive dream of being a rock performer. This intensely moving autobiographical piece called "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" will have you laughing one minute, crying the next, and finally pumping your fist in euphoric elation while jumping for joy. The music's not bad either. I give this movie my highest rating...4 stars out of 4."
You'd have to see the movie to understand why Hedwig is looking so glum in this clip, but long story short this is one of the best songs in the film "Makeup (Wig in a Box)" posted by caint at youtube:

One of the key themes in the movie, is Hedwig's endless search for his soulmate or "other half." That's what the song "Origin of Love" is about. Here is an entertaining live performance by director and star John Cameron Mitchell (posted by Brian Bubonic at youtube):

Is a path chosen for us by destiny, or are we just here by chance, and that's all there is? These two opposing philosophies duke it out when Tommy Gnosis sings "Wicked Little Town." (IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE FILM WATCHING THIS CLIP MIGHT RUIN THE ENDING A LITTLE BIT SO BE FOREWARNED!)
